Gemological Institute of America

Established in 1931, Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones, and pearls. A public benefit, nonprofit institute, GIA is the leading source of knowledge, standards, and education in gems and jewelry. Canad offered business consulting and transformative technology professional services to Gemological Institute of America for its largest gemological grading service to the gem and jewelry industry.

GIA faced a major challenge in meeting its mission and business objectives of delivering a reliable, efficient and faster-grading service to its large customer base using legacy AS400 computing platform. GIA engaged Canad to help with its business process re-engineering, system design, and technology transformation initiatives in order to meet its strategic as well as tactical objectives. Canad designed and implemented the enterprise architecture for GIA to run ‘end to end’ business services starting from diamond intake to return efficiently with needed data integrity, compliance, and security.

Enterprise architecture recommendation and its successful implementation included platform standardization and migration from AS400 to Oracle fourth generation computing platform. In addition to redefining the computing platform,  enterprise architecture solution provided included the critical business continuity and disaster recovery needs of GIA. The new system design helped GIA to track movement of diamonds in its service more accurately and to check the compliance and integrity of the diamond grading services. The process automation and reporting helped GIA to gain better insight into business intelligence, which ultimately helped in meeting customer demand and industry compliance.

Pleased with its successful delivery, GIA requested Canad to implement technology solutions such as real application clustering, data guard, and data replication service between New York and Carlsbad, CA. Market leadership exercise and process automation initiatives benefited ‘gem buying’ consumer to have a much deeper understanding of different facets of diamonds and colored stones.
